Dental Crowns
Over time our teeth begin to weaken and become more susceptible to problems such as decay, cracks, discoloration and others. If you feel your smile isn’t what it once was, crowns (or caps) can help you recover your smile. If your dentist notices that a tooth is decayed or seems weakened/cracked, a crown may be necessary to make sure that there are no additional problems with the tooth. In cases like this a filling or bonding will not be sufficient.
Dental crowns fit over injured, discolored, or cracked teeth, or fill the space resulting after dental extractions and protect the teeth from further injuries or damages.
Consult Grand River Dental in Kitchener for an expert opinion about whether dental crowns or bridges could be the right solution for you.
Dental Crowns are used to restore teeth that have been broken or are at high risk of doing so due to decaying fillings or fractures, and will look and feel similar to your real teeth. Dental Crowns are typically constructed from porcelain fused with metal. For a more natural appearance, it is best to use a porcelain finish, since porcelain can be matched to the shade of your other teeth.
The Procedure
Crown procedures take 2-3 visits to your dentist. During your first visit, our dentists will prepare your tooth structure by filing down the enamel for the crown to be placed over it. You will be given a local anesthetic for this part of the procedure so you won't experience any discomfort. After the tooth is reshaped, an impression of the prepared tooth and the surrounding teeth will be taken. This impression is then sent to a dental lab to have your crown created to fit in the spot created. In the mean time, a temporary crown will be placed over your filed down tooth.
It takes about 1-2 weeks for the crown to be returned to your dentist. At this time you will book your second crown appointment to place and fit the permanent crown. You will again have a local anesthetic applied for this part of the procedure and the crown is placed using a cement to ensure the crown sets in place.
When the procedure is finished, the crown will blend seamlessly with your teeth, return the strength that you need for comfortable oral function, and restore your all-white smile for the next 10-15 years.
